If you’re visiting Serbia and want to experience real Serbian cuisine beyond Belgrade’s tourist restaurants, Gostionica Karađorđe in Lazarevac is worth the 45-minute drive south.
Lazarevac is a small town that most tourists never see — and that’s exactly why the food here is authentic. No tourist pricing, no watered-down recipes, no English-first menus. This is where locals eat, celebrate, and bring their families.
The menu centers on what Serbian cuisine does best: grilled meats prepared over charcoal (ćevapi, pljeskavica, smoked pork neck), slow-cooked specialties like veal under the bell (ispod sača), and the restaurant’s namesake dish — Karađorđe schnitzel, a rolled and breaded veal cutlet stuffed with kajmak, Serbia’s signature creamy cheese spread.
For starters, order a charcuterie board (lopar) — a wooden platter of cured meats, kajmak, local cheese, kulen sausage, and čvarci (pork cracklings). Pair it with a glass of Serbian wine from Kovačević or Aleksić, or try domestic rakija — plum brandy is the classic, but quince and pear varieties are excellent.
The restaurant has a spacious outdoor garden that’s perfect in spring and summer, free parking, and a warm interior during colder months. Prices are very reasonable by European standards — a full meal with drinks typically runs 1,500-3,000 RSD per person (roughly €13-26).
Gostionica Karađorđe is open daily from 8 AM. Breakfast is served until 1 PM and includes both traditional Serbian options (burek, uštipci with kajmak, popara) and modern choices (avocado toast, granola, omelette wraps).
